In the Presence of the Governor of Taiz: Mayyun and the Yemeni Lawyers Association Organize a Training Workshop for the Bar’s Staff on Human Rights

The Yemeni Lawyers Association – Taiz Branch, in partnership and cooperation with Mayyun Organization for Human Rights, organized a two-day specialized training workshop titled “The Role of Lawyers in the Protection of Human Rights.” The workshop brought together 25 male and female lawyers from the Legal Aid Team of the Taiz Branch, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the professional and human rights capacities of the association’s members.

The training program, held on November 1–2, focused on equipping participants with fundamental knowledge and skills in the areas of monitoring and documentation, information assessment and analysis, and mechanisms for providing legal and judicial assistance, in line with relevant international standards and the binding nature of international human rights conventions in practical application. A significant portion of the sessions was also dedicated to the exchange of practical experiences.

Trainers Mueen Al-Obaidi, Tawfiq Al-Shaabi, Ghazi Al-Samie, Mokhtar Al-Wafi, and Raghda Al-Maqtari delivered practical presentations on methodologies of monitoring and documentation, context analysis, and the legal assessment of information in light of international human rights conventions.
Additionally, the program discussed the pivotal role of the Yemeni Lawyers Association in providing legal support and protection to victims of human rights violations.

The closing session featured a constructive and fruitful dialogue led by the participants with Judge Mohammed Sultan, Chief of the Court of Appeals Prosecution Office in Taiz Governorate. The discussion reviewed key challenges facing the Legal Aid Team and those affecting the association’s role in providing judicial assistance. Judge Sultan emphasized the importance of the workshop and commended the active role of the Legal Aid Team, affirming that providing legal aid and assistance to those in need is among the core duties of the Lawyers Association in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

The discussions concluded with an affirmation of the importance of strengthening mechanisms for cooperation and coordination between the association and the Public Prosecution to uphold the rule of law and improve access to justice.

The workshop concluded in the presence of Nabil Shamsan, Governor of Taiz and Head of the Local Authority, who delivered a speech commending the organizers for their efforts in making the event a success and expressing his appreciation for the vital role played by the Lawyers Association.

Governor Shamsan called on the association to play an active and supportive role alongside the local authority in implementing Presidential Leadership Council Resolution No. 11 of 2025, describing the decision as “an eradication and drying up of all forms of waste and corruption in public funds and illegal levies imposed on citizens.” He stressed that the directives regarding the resolution are strict and clear in their implementation.

The Governor reaffirmed the local authority’s commitment to supporting and empowering the association to fully carry out its legal responsibilities, emphasizing that such support constitutes a fundamental pillar in strengthening the rule of law and protecting human rights in the governorate.
